Colin McLaren CPA, CMA

We are delighted to introduce Colin McLaren, who is a locally based accountant, known to work hard to develop new and innovative solutions to managing client financial business needs. He is an expert at understanding how to ameliorate issues, process and communicate effectively among all management teams in the organization, and improve the bottom line of all businesses that he manages, to help them reach their business goals and objectives in the most direct route possible.

Colin graduated from St. Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Masters of Business Administration (2006), both in Accounting. He has also achieved his CPA/CMA designation, and has relevant experience in the corporate business world with many international and domestic employers.

Colin’s business expertise has been developed working at the following organizations:

  • Controller – Fairley & Stevens Limited, Dartmouth, NS (May 2010- August 2018)
  • Controller – Corridor Resources Inc., Halifax, NS (March 2008- May 2010)
  • Controller – Gammon Gold, Halifax, NS, & Chihuahua, Mexico (April 2007 – March 2008)
  • Joint Venture Analyst – ExxonMobil, Halifax, NS (February 2004 – April 2007)
  • Operations Analyst – ExxonMobil, Halifax, NS (October 1999 – February 2004)

Colin has worked with accounting his entire life, and contributed to his family business at a young age, while watching his mother manage the bookkeeping for his father’s pulpwood contracting business in rural Nova Scotia. His interest in the management and maintenance of his client’s financial needs is of great importance to Colin, and he works with clients to ensure that their financial services needs are met at all levels of the business venture. Colin’s strength and accounting acumen is instrumental to his understanding of how to apply financial growth analysis and guide the improvement of the overall financial health at an organization. In this way, he is able to offer the best advice on all levels of a business venture to manage these important client financial concerns.

The expertise that Colin has developed in his 12 years as a Controller in the oil and gas and mining industries extends to his ability to understand the needs of conglomerates in every industry, as well as knowing how to manage the financial services needs of smaller and mid-sized companies. He is well traveled and works easily with clients located in international regions. His more recent experience as Controller for a large retail auto dealership, has provided Colin with hands on entrepreneurial experience, that helps him understand the needs and value-added services that he can provide to his clients. Colin is familiar with many significant accounting systems and internal reporting structures, including: financial reporting, systems reporting, treasury, internal reporting, revenue and expense accounting, royalty accounting, joint venture reporting and billing and customer services.

Colin is excited to work with new and established business ventures, and welcomes everyone in the Bedford and Dartmouth regions to reach out and connect with him regarding their accounting, tax, and business accounting management needs. When Colin is not working, he can be found spending time making memories with his family, playing recreational team hockey, going on ATV adventures and hiking with the family dog Ellie in the national parks and reserves in his region.
